Fourth overall for Yu Kuai and Cheng Congfu in GT World Challenge Asia
• Double silver podium for FAW Audi Sport Asia Team Phantom pair in Fuji
• André Pato and Jaxon Evans bounce back after race one setback
• Rollercoaster Audi debut for Andy Tan and Thierry Vermeulen

Fuji, July 13, 2026 – FAW Audi Sport Asia Team Phantom’s Cheng Congfu and Yu Kuai took a fourth place overall finish at round three of GT World Challenge Asia powered by AWS, having been in strong podium contention right up to the dying seconds of the race. The pair also took double GT3 Silver podiums at the 4.563km Fuji International Speedway, to put them just three points off the top of the class leaderboard. It was a turbulent weekend for Audi Sport Asia Team Phantom’s André Pato and Jaxon Evans, and Absolute Racing duo Andy Tan and Thierry Vermeulen on their Audi debut together, both teams enduring mixed fortunes during the two hard-fought encounters at the iconic Japanese track.

“Yu Kuai and Cheng Congfu were unfortunate to miss out on the overall podium in race one.” said Alexander Blackie, Head of Audi Sport customer racing Asia. “There were a number of challenges over the weekend in Fuji. Now it’s time to reset as we head into the second half of the season at Okayama.”

Race one saw a triumphant Cheng and Yu take a superb fourth overall and second place Silver finish, the latter having valiantly defended an overall podium right up to the dying seconds of the gruelling 34-lap encounter. A captivating recovery drive in race two after Yu was forced off track at the start, dropping him to the back of the field, brought a second Silver podium for the indomitable duo.

For stablemates Pato and Evans, however, it was a challenging opening race, an early incident resulting in retirement and incurring in a five-place grid penalty for race two. Despite the setback, the second race was a different story, the pair finishing just outside the top 10 overall amongst the 25-strong international field.

Making their Audi debut together, Vermeulen and Tan caught the eye on the way to their top seven Pro/Am finish in race one after a lightning stint by the Dutchman. However, despite climbing to eight overall in the final race of the weekend, a subsequent drive-through penalty followed by a late-race incident dashed their hopes.

Race 1
A strong qualifying run by Cheng Congfu earned a P2 start for FAW Audi Sport Asia Team Phantom. Cheng snatched the lead in a thrilling start to the 34-lap race, but the advantage was short-lived when a rival tore around the outside of the leading pair on the opening lap.

Further down the field, disaster struck for André Pato, high-speed contact at turn 10 during the opening-lap melee resulting in terminal damage. Audi Sport Asia Team Phantom were forced to retire the car, ending their chance of points.

Andy Tan, meanwhile, made initial gains in the Absolute Racing Audi R8 LMS GT3 evo II from a P9 Pro/Am start, before losing ground ahead of the pit window.

Up at the front, meanwhile, Cheng was reeling in the race leader, while coming under pressure from behind. While simultaneously pushing hard and defending fiercely while locked in an intense three-way battle, Cheng was handed a five second penalty for a false start. As the driver changeover window opened, Cheng was passed by a rival seconds before the duelling pair dived into the pits together.

Cheng handed the wheel to Yu after the team had served the five second penalty, while Thierry Vermeulen took over from Tan at Absolute Racing. Both drivers blasted into their stints, Yu third overall and second of the Silver runners, while Vermeulen had his work cut out to climb from further down the order.

Vermeulen set a blistering pace, one which he maintained throughout his stint. Likewise, impressive pace and consistency from Yu saw him shake off an aggressive rival before closing in on P2.

A nail biting final few minutes saw another challenge to Yu from a Pro driver behind. Fully harnessing the superior straight-line speed of the Audi, Yu mounted an heroic defence, holding firm right up until the final few corners of the last lap. Although heartbroken, Yu nevertheless crossed the line fourth, less than half a second off the overall podium, and taking crucial second place Silver points for himself and team mate Cheng.

After a consistently-rapid stint and eye-catching final push, Vermeulen took a P7 Pro/Am finish for himself and Tan on their Audi debut together.

There was further disappointment for Pato and Jaxon Evans to come when the team was handed a race two five-place grid penalty for the opening-lap incident, all the more crushing given the pair had qualified an impressive P4.

Race 2
Taking to the challenging circuit for the first time in round three, Jaxon Evans was the top-starting Audi R8 LMS GT3 evo II. The Audi Sport Asia Team Phantom driver set off from P9, with fellow Pro/Am Audi contender Thierry Vermeulen lining up behind him on the grid. Yu Kuai took a row six start for FAW Audi Sport Asia Team Phantom, third of the Silver entrants.

It was a disastrous start for Yu, but the blameless driver’s quick thinking saved the day when he was forced off track during the opening lap charge. Although deftly avoiding contact, the incident demoted Yu to the rear of the pack, but he immediately engaged fight-back mode and the race for the podium was quickly back on track.

Evans made the most gains in the opening stages, climbing to sixth overall and closing in on a Pro/Am podium, while behind him Vermeulen also rose up the order to P8, and on the offensive.

When the pit window opened, Yu was the first to hand over the wheel. Cheng Congfu took up the mantle, surviving an early turn 10 incident for which his Silver rival was handed a drive through penalty.

Andrés Pato took the wheel of the Audi Sport Asia Team Phantom car from team mate Evans, gaining ground and climbing to fifth overall. His signature feisty driving style produced some captivating side-by-side racing as the competition intensified.

Vermeulen handed over to Andy Tan, the Indonesian emerging in the top ten and following Pato into the fray. However, his charge was halted when Tan was handed a drive through penalty for track limits. That put the Indonesian right down the order, misfortune striking again when he became entangled in a late-race incident at turn 11 for which his rival was subsequently handed a drive through penalty, converted post-race to 38-seconds.

In the meantime, Cheng continued his rise though the order, gaining ground and putting the FAW Audi Sport Asia Team Phantom car into Silver podium contention. The Chinese star fiercely defended the position, and crucial championship points, all the way to the line, taking a top-ten overall finish and a third place GT3 Silver podium finish for the team.

Pato finished just outside the top 10 overall, P7 of the Pro/Am entries, he and Evans once again proving a formidable pairing.
