Beijing/Shanghai, September 3, 2026 — The AUDI Innovation & Technology Center (AITC) is officially established in Shanghai as a new joint venture between AUDI AG and SAIC Motor — launching the R&D entity with full-vehicle development and end-to-end capability exclusively for the AUDI Letter brand. Headquartered in Shanghai, this move underscores the long-term commitment of Audi to the Chinese market and determines the next strategic step to strengthen the footprint of AUDI-branded vehicles.
This joint venture is a cornerstone of Audi's dual-brand strategy in China. Building on the successful launch of the AUDI brand and its first two models, the E5 Sportback and E7X, this deepening of the partnership with SAIC takes the "Best of Both Worlds" vision to a new level. By combining Audi's more than a century of engineering exellence with SAIC's leading local innovation capabilities, as well as China’s supply chain advantages and deep market insights, the collaboration reinforces the brand’s unwavering strategic focus on China.
Fred Schulze, CEO of Audi and SAIC Cooperation & Chairman of the Board of Directors of AITC stated: "This is a historic milestone for the AUDI brand. The new AITC will become the innovation driver for our next generation of products. With the ADP 2.0 now in development, we are creating new product DNA tailored for this market."
Dr. Johannes Roscheck, President of Audi China, stated: “The AITC demonstrates Audi's long-term commitment to China. We are bringing together Audi's German engineering precision with local market innovation to deliver customer-centric premium mobility solutions. Our strengthened R&D footprint will further elevate our competitiveness with distinctive Audi DNA in China.”
Zu Sijie, Vice President & Chief Engineer of SAIC Motor, stated: “AITC marks another significant milestone in the deepening strategic partnership between SAIC and Audi. Rooted in China and embracing a global vision, we are committed to injecting strong innovative momentum into the AUDI brand with new thinking, new models, and new technologies — setting a new benchmark for intelligent premium electric vehicles.”
Pioneering the future of Software-Defined Vehicles (SDV) and AI-Defined Vehicles (AIDV), AITC will focus on intelligent electrification technology R&D and full-vehicle development. Core R&D priorities include whole vehicle & driving dynamics, immersive AI-powered smart cabins, and next-generation advanced driver assistance systems, tailored specifically for Chinese premium customers.
Audi and SAIC will jointly develop four all-new AUDI models based on the next-generation of the Advanced Digitized Platform (ADP) — an architecture purpose-built for future intelligent connected vehicles. This new product matrix will extend and complement AUDI's existing portfolio in China, with the first model scheduled for launch from 2028 onwards.
To lead this new venture, Matthias Pfister from Audi has been appointed as General Manager of AITC, and Shan Yunwei from SAIC as Deputy General Manager. Bringing proven leadership in both German and Chinese automotive R&D environments, he previously worked as Head of the Pre-Series Center at SAIC-Volkswagen Shanghai, giving him firsthand insight into local development dynamics. He will oversee the operational strategy, R&D integration, and business development of the AITC. Together, they will lead a team of 300 top talents to create the next generation of AI-driven premium mobility. “AITC allows us to bring our local and international experts under one joint roof to provide the premium technical solutions for our products – fast, reliable, innovative and best of both worlds,” said Matthias Pfister.
The establishment of the AUDI Innovation & Technology Center is a testament to the strong collaboration between AUDI AG and SAIC Motor. By leveraging German engineering precision with Chinese innovation speed, the joint venture is set to further push forward intelligent mobility for Chinese customers.
